Introduction to Animal Husbandry

Animal husbandry refers to the production sector that raises livestock and poultry through grazing, pen feeding, or a combination of both to obtain animal products or draft animals. It includes livestock feeding, poultry raising, and the domestication of economic animals. The main characteristics and requirements of animal husbandry are:

(1) Its expanded reproduction is closely related to the ratio of male livestock, female livestock, young livestock, and juvenile livestock within various types of livestock and poultry. Therefore, maintaining a reasonable herd structure is very important for accelerating the development of animal husbandry.

(2) Feed is the foundation of animal husbandry; only by continuously solving the feed problem can the development of animal husbandry be accelerated.

(3) Animal husbandry has a high degree of commercialization, but its products are not easy to transport and are prone to spoilage. Therefore, close cooperation is required in aspects such as procurement, processing, storage, and transportation.

(4) Animal husbandry has a high adaptability to natural and economic conditions; it can be both grazing and stall-fed.

Due to these characteristics and requirements, the development of animal husbandry must be based on the natural economic conditions of each region, adapting measures to local conditions and leveraging advantages.
